WITH JEFF BELL – USA WORLD CLASS WINNER 2013
THE CURATOR OF UNFORGETTABLE EVENINGS
Today we’re talking to WORLD CLASS USA winner Jeff Bell about creating extraordinary drinks and memorable nights.
What was your inspiration for creating your cocktail?
I created the Jan Collins (pronounced Yan) especially for a festival in the States called Tennessee’s Bonnaroo Music Festival. It is a crisp, fresh tasting cocktail that is just perfect for relaxing under a cloud-free sky in the glorious sunshine while listening to your favourite acts.
So do all your cocktails have concepts?
I like to play around with the concept of terroir. It’s a practice based on the insight that ingredients hailing from the same part of the world fuse well together. If individual elements come from the same soil, grain or fruit, they’ll have something in common that provides a smooth bridge. It helps me to create more enhanced and complete drinking experiences.
What's the most important skill in bartending?
The ability to multitask is one of the most important parts of bartending. Essentially, you are controlling a very big cocktail party and you have to make sure everyone’s having a good time.
So, do you have any favourite flavours you like to work with?
New and unfamiliar flavour combinations are always fun to work with. This is why I created Jan Collins using the honey and citrus taste cues of Ketel One and the spiced orange notes of Mandarine Napoleon.
And finally, what do you love most about your job?
I love interacting with guests and working with them to curate a special evening that fits all their cocktail needs.
